Fumbled by Lizzi Stone

Cute and Fun to Read

Picture
Fumbled by Lizzi Stone was a fun romantic comedy with clever banter and likeable characters. Hawk and Becca knew each other in high school - back when Hawk wasn't so nice. In fact, he kind of broke Becca's heart, and she vows to get revenge on him for being a jerk. Now a journalist, when she has the opportunity to interview the famous football star, Becca wants to humiliate him by getting him to ask her out and then laughing in his face. Of course, when Hawk realizes she is up to something and calls her on it, her plan goes up in smoke.

Perhaps as a way to make up for past wrongs and because he wants to spend more time with Becca, Hawk bets her that he can make her fall for him in three weeks. If she doesn't, he will give her all the exclusives for the upcoming football season. In my opinion, he should have offered her the exclusives anyway, bet or no bet, as a way to make up for his past behaviour. Either way, it gives the two opportunities to get together and fall for each other.

While I liked Becca (a journalist with integrity! Who knew!) and Hawk and was eager to see their romance bloom, I don't think the premise of the bet was needed. I'm not a huge fan of this trope and I think that the author could have found another reason for the two leads to spend time together. I also found Hawk a bit cryptic with some of his past - to us, the reader. When it was is POV, he would make comments about his mother and past but then quickly change the subject, which I don't think was necessary. He could have told us what was going on early on and avoided a bit of reader frustration. But other than that, this was a fun and enjoyable read.

Fumbled by Lizzi Stone is the first in the Chesapeake Commanders sports rom-com series. I also really enjoyed the banter between the teammates and look forward to reading the other guys' stories. I find the author did a good job of introducing us to other characters and making us want more from this world after we finished with Fumbled. I liked reading Becca and Hawk's love story and I know I will come back to this series for more.

I received a free copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Final Score: 4 Stars out of 5
