A good debut novel with a bit of room to grow
In the seductive world of exotic dancing and posh night clubs, set to the rich backdrop of New York City, Dance for me by C.M. Danks teaches us that sometimes it's okay to be a bit naughty. We meet Vanessa, a down on her luck and kind of desperately unemployed young woman who is facing an impending eviction notice. Vanessa lost her job and will soon lose her apartment if a miracle doesn't happen. That miracle comes in the form of meeting Jack, who offers Vanessa a way out of her problems - as long as she's willing to walk a little on the dark and sexy side. Jack and Vanessa do not have a meet cute - in fact, she's pretty rude and peers down her nose at what he happens to do for a living - he owns a popular and exclusive gentleman's club where he would like to pay her money for her to take her clothes off. At first Vanessa is completely against the idea. That soon changes when she really takes in her bleak situation, and she decides to take him up on his offer. What neither of them expect is to find romance with each other in the process. Vanessa enters Jack's dark and edgy world and neither of them will be the same ever again.
This is Danks' debut novel, and in saying that, I think she did a good job. I do think she could improve in some areas but that's to be expected in a first time author. It definitely takes guts to put yourself out there (ha like Vanessa) and she should be proud of accomplishing that.
Now for a bit of heaviness: I found Vanessa to be a bit unlikeable if I'm being honest. I'm seeing a lot of people really liked her as a character - and that's great. But for me, she just wasn't my cup of tea. For one thing, she loses her job and absolutely refuses to try any other work - she turns her nose up at retail, waitressing, being a nanny - I think if she was that hard up for cash, she wouldn't get to be so picky. I also found that even though she was unemployed, she was still kind of living the spoiled lifestyle - I mean, getting her regular coffee order (which if it was at a New York coffee shop can't have been cheap), taking cabs and Ubers - I get that's the NYC lifestyle, but her bills were piling up. Then she takes the stripper job as if it's her last resort when she could have grabbed herself a couple of other gigs that weren't in her industry just to keep a roof over her head. Sigh...I could go on, but I don't think any of us want me to pull out examples and quotes from the book - plus I'm sure a lot of this is just me being picky.
One other thing I will say is that I wanted to see more from Jack's perspective. I have been getting used to dual POV - and I completely understand that it's not every writer's cup of tea. But I didn't feel like I got a true sense of what he was thinking sometimes and of who he was away from Vanessa. In romance novels, men play a vital role. In fact, most often, the books I read are for the male characters! Why else do you think so many covers these days have a hot guy with no shirt on?
Anyway...the book was a good start in Danks' writing career and I think with a bit of tweaking, she'll do well. Ha, that could easily apply to us all.
Thank you to the author and to Bed and Books PR for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
