Didn't Fly For Me - 3.5 Stars
The old Friends with Benefits / Roommates to Lovers trope is fun and I was looking forward to seeing how that played out in Broken Dove by Chelle Bliss. In these types of stories, feelings always get involved - and grow more complicated - as soon as sex is introduced. Well of course they do.
In Broken Dove, Leo, a prospect for an MC, and Lia, the club president's daughter, live together as roommates. Leo is a young mechanic and is eager to earn his patch for the club. He is willing to do anything for men he already considers his brothers. Lia is a carefree, free spirit who has only just gotten to know her father and his family in the club. She has been living with Leo for about a year and the two have been secretly sleeping together - their chemistry is off the charts, but they won't admit that maybe they feel more for each other. When family drama and stuff from Leo's past creep up, Leo and Lia have to work together to solve the problem. Will they fix everything so that their arrangement can stay the same? Do they even want it to stay as is, or do they want more?
What I wasn't expecting was to start the book off with the couple already in the middle of their arrangement. I always like to read or see the first time a couple takes the plunge - it's such a turning point in a romance novel. So realizing that Leo and Lia were already friends with benefits was a bit of a let down right off the bat. The thing is, Broken Dove is book two in the Open Roads series, and I don't think it should be read as a standalone. Apparently the characters are introduced in book one and so when I stepped in, I felt like I was missing several pieces of the story. Several events from the previous book are alluded to as well, and I hate feeling behind on the gossip, so to speak. I felt like I came in at the middle of the movie, and I didn't have the remote to rewind.
That being said, I really liked Leo. I wanted him to get his patch, and belong in the club. I wanted him to get the girl. I can't say I felt the same about Lia. I didn't like the way she flirted with Arrow (a guy from Leo's past) - I don't like love triangles - I like the main couple to be solely focused on each other in their romance novel. So reading this book there were definite things that bothered me - but some of that comes down to my personal tastes. I do think that if I had read the first one I would have gone in with the background that was needed to get the full experience. So maybe I'll go back and start at the beginning.
I received a free copy of this book from Valentine PR and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A simple arrangement. A complicated future.
