Nostalgic Fun - 4 Stars
Melissa Brown takes me right back to the film Clerks with this fun, nostalgic 90s Enemies-to-Lovers RomCom. In the time of VHS and movie rentals, when film knowledge was impressive because there was no site called IMDB and you didn't have an encyclopedia cell phone in your pocket, Ms. Brown has a lot of fun and brings us along for the ride. She's created a quirky cast in this book which makes it interesting to read. And the romance between Ben and Naomi is really a bonus. In Be Kind Rewind, we meet the employees of the best job on a college campus, Spotlight Video. Ben is the assistant manager, and part of his job is reeling in the cast of oddballs and misfits that work there. When Naomi starts at Spotlight Video, she and Ben do not get off on the right foot. Naomi does need the job - her bank account is in dire straights - but it is definitely not her passion. Naomi knows she is destined for great things. She is going to be a movie star, not stuck returning rented porn videos behind a flimsy pink curtain. So she isn't always the ideal employee and when Ben scolds her, which is often, she finds him to be such a buzzkill. But soon, their feelings start to change, much to their chagrin. Can they overcome their bad first impressions of each other to develop a romantic relationship? And if so, what happens when Naomi graduates and goes off to make it big?
Be Kind Rewind is a witty, lively, and entertaining book. The pop culture references are quippy and fast paced, and if you grew up in the 90s, you'll get the references. If not, it's okay - you've got that handy cell phone encyclopedia in your pocket, remember? Ben and Naomi's romance is rocky at first but soon develops like an old polaroid picture (see what I did there?). It's blurry at first but eventually, with a few shakes, the image shows up nice and clear. They were a cute couple, even though I did side with Ben a lot of the time (I guess I'm a buzzkill too). I'm looking forward to reading more from this quirky crew and transporting myself back to a better plaid-filled time.
**Ms. Brown has written a really fun prequel as well, called Adventures in Inventory which helps you get an idea of the cast of characters, which I really recommend starting with. Not necessary to enjoy the book, but if you can read it, do so.
I received a free copy of this book from Grey's Promotions and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A 90s nostalgia, enemies to lovers novel from Melissa Brown, set in her brand new Spotlight Video Series!
She's always dreamed of living her life in the spotlight. But for now, she's just another college student working at Spotlight Video.
The year is 1994 and Naomi Parker has always dreamed of being in the movies. She's hoping to make that dream a reality by enrolling in the best performing arts program the Midwest has to offer. But respected programs cost money...lots of it...and her scholarship will only go so far. To make ends meet, Naomi gets a job at the most popular video store on campus, Spotlight Video, and she quickly becomes part of its unique culture. There's only one employee she can't stand, the Assistant Manager, Buzzkill Ben.
Ben Watson is tired of the employee revolving door at Spotlight Video. He's tired of people calling in sick, blowing off work, and treating the place like a bar with no cover charge. As the Assistant Manager, he works hard to balance work and school so that he can make something of himself when he graduates. There's only one problem...he can't get the newest employee out of his head. She's just like all the others--she's constantly late, doesn't take things seriously and questions his authority. But she's also nothing like the others, or anyone he's ever met, and that's the problem.
Will working closely together spark a romantic interest between these very different people, or will Ben be a buzzkill after all?
